The Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) is a joint partnership between the USPTO and the EPO where the existing classification systems (European Classification (ECLA) and United States Patent Classification (USPC)) and harmonized towards a common classification scheme.

USPTO 7 Step Patent Search Strategy

USPTO SEVEN STEP STRATEGY

ipMAGNET implements the USPTO's Seven Step Strategy by Searching Classes and Subclasses from the new CPC based on your Invention Keywords and Downloading Patents and Publications for the selected classsification title.

  • STEP 1: Enter your Invention Keywords to get CPC Schemes
  • STEP 2A: Click GET CPC SCHEMES to Search CPC Classification Schema



  • STEP 2B: Select a CPC Scheme to get Classification titles



  • STEP 2C: Select the Relevant classification title in the class scheme



  • STEP 3: Review Classification Definition Linked to the CPC Classification title selected



  • STEP 4: Search for Patents for CPC Classification just selected and Review Full Text and PDF Images



  • STEP 5: Conduct In-Depth Review of the Patent using the Prior Art Searches Feature.

  • Additional Searches can be performed using ipMAGNET's EPO Screen.


  • STEP 6,7: Repeat STEPS 4 and 5 for Pre-Grant Publications.

ipMAGNET CPC Tools

  • Select a CPC Section to get Subclasses or
  • Enter a CPC Code to get Groups or
  • Enter USPC Code to get CPC Mapping and Finally..
  • Copy and Paste any CPC Code and quickly Search all Patents in that Group
  • Select a CPC Section to get Subclasses
    • STEP 1 :
      Select one of the 9 CPC Sections to get Subclasses.
       

    • STEP 2 :
      All the Subclasses for that Section will be displayed.
      Select one of the Subclasses of your Choice(Ex: B01M) which will
      =>get all the groups for that CPC Class and
      =>displays a detailed CPC Page from the USPTO in the Embedded Viewer.
       

    • STEP 3 :
      Select a Group to Search for all the Patents in that Group.
       

  • Enter a CPC Code to get Groups
    • STEP 1 :
      Enter either CPC Class-only(B01L) or Full Classification(B01L 1/02) if you aready know it.
      You can also Copy and Paste or Enter a CPC Code
      From the Embedded Viewer select(copy) any CPC Code and

      Paste the copied Code into the Box.
       

    • STEP 2 :
      =>All the groups for that CPC Class will be displayed.
      =>Detailed CPC Page for that Class will be displayed in the Embedded Viewer.
       

    • STEP 3 :
      Select a CPC Group from the List and Search for all the Patents in that Group.
       

  • Mapping From USPC TO CPC
    • STEP 1 :
      To get the Most statistically relevant CPC groups and Subclasses for USPC Codes you can:

      ==>Enter it in the Box if you already know it and Click MAP IT

      or
      ==>Check GO TO USPC SCREEN for additional USPC Searches.
      Once you find the required USPC Code from that Screen, you can come back here for additional tasks.

       

    • STEP 2 :
      =>All the statistically relevant CPC Groups and Subclasses will be listed.

      =>Select a Group or Subclass from the List and Search for all the Patents.
